Book 33 on my “March to 100 for 2019″—Joe Hill: NOS4A2—A vampire-like creature kidnaps children and feeds off their energy.

Joe Hill, in case you do not recognize the name, is the eldest son of Stephen King and NOS4A2 is the most King-like of all of his novels. The title refers to the vanity plate on a 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith. Sounded out, the plate becomes Nosferatu, a vampiric reference from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, Dracula, and the 1922 silent movie classic. The word probably derives from the Romanian reference to Satan.

In this case, the car is owned by a serial killer of children dying in prison. But does his death mark an end or a beginning? It’s a horror novel—you get one guess.

The heroine, Victoria McQueen, has the ability to travel to a spot of her choosing, though she neither controls the gift well nor understands what it costs her. But she is the only person to have escaped the serial killer alive.

But when he captures her son, the authorities refuse to believe her (since they assume he died in prison) and she must set off on her own to save him.

This is classic horror with all the requisite mythology and gore. If you like the genre, this book is well worth it. But be forewarned that Mr. Hill has also inherited his father’s ability to write lengthy novels as this one clocks in at over 700 pages.
