2018 Goal: Book 91 Of 100

NOTE: As noted in my December 2018 update, I will start posting my thoughts on the books I read as I complete them. If you want to continue receiving the monthly update, please subscribe to my newsletter.

Imagine if you received the horrifying news that the spouse you dearly loved and trusted was just killed in a horrific plane accident. The devastating loss would be almost impossible to reconcile.

But add to that reconciliation nightmare the fact that you knew that he couldn’t be on that flight because he was speaking at a conference in a totally different city. You knew it because he told you. And because you had seen the conference brochure with his photo on it.

In your panic and grief, what do you do? You call the hotel where the conference is being held and ask to speak to your husband.

Except the hotel says your husband isn’t there. And there is no such conference. Never was one.

And so begins the nightmare for Iris. Unable to accept Will’s death without understanding why he was on the flight, she begins to dig. And the more she digs, the more lies she uncovers.

Who was the man that she had spent the last seven years happily married to? Why was he headed to a city they had never visited? Why did none of the childhood memories he had shared with her seem to be true? Is anything true?

Belle does an excellent job of describing the emotional chaos that Iris is going through, not only of the initial shock of losing her beloved husband but of the confusion over his past. Ienjoyed the peeling away of layer after layer of the story.  And the more she finds, the more I sympathized with her dilemma – do you really want to know or do you just stop looking?
