In the first book of the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series, the homicide chief visits the idyllic village of Three Pines and meets its many eccentric inhabitants. One of its citizens died in what appears to be a hunting accident, except that the hunter took great pains to hide his involvement.

Gamache mentors a young protege who he has hand-picked to join his team, but also questions whether he misjudged her ability to fit in. His long-term right hand questions the addition as the new detective makes crucial mistakes and creates friction with the villagers.

As the crime increasingly looks like a murder rather than an accident, the suspect pool is large and murky. Gamache’s investigative style is slow and methodical, listening and observing as he shifts for clues, and that approach increases his personal risk.
