The suspected killer of Lauren Novak is released from prison and sends a taunting letter to her husband, Markus, before disappearing. Trying to find the man and understand what led to his wife’s murder, he visits a strange town known for its collection of psychics that also happens to be the last place Lauren visited. His only clues are her schedule and the mysterious words in her journal, Rise the Dark.

When the visit go disastrously wrong, he joins forces with a woman who claims to be hunting the same people. The clues point across the country to a Montana town that just happens to be Markus’ childhood home, a place he swore he would never return to.

In Montana, another man discovers his wife has been kidnapped by a group of people who want something from him. His only skill is his ability to work on the power lines that support the nation’s power grid, but he doesn’t understand how they think he can cause enough damage on his own to create havoc.

One warning—this is the second book in the Markus Novak series, something I didn’t know when I started reading. The novel appears to stand on its own, but I have the first book to read and will let you know when I know.
