Helene to the tune of Jolene by Dolly Parton

Thinking of everyone in the path of Helene

As soon-to-be Hurricane Helene grows in the gulf, much of the Southeastern United States is in her path.

Here in Asheville and the surrounding mountains, we’re expecting a foot or more of rain. If that happens, we will see severe flooding of creeks and valleys, fallen trees, and power outages. The worst will be the landslides which can be sadly common during a tropical system.

My thoughts are for everyone in her crosshairs, especially the people along the Florida coast who will deal with a huge storm surge.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, I woke this morning with Dolly Parton’s classic “Jolene” rattling in my brain, only it was an ode to Hurricane Helene. With my deepest apologies (and much respect) to Dolly, I present… Helene.

Helene
(To the tune of “Jolene” by Dolly Parton)

Helene, Helene, Helene, Helene
We’re begging of you please don’t flood our land
Helene, Helene, Helene, Helene
Please don’t harm us just because you can

Your power is beyond compare
With howling winds and torrent rare
With swirling rain and waves of churning sea
Your approach fills us with growing dread
We can only watch the rivers spread
And we cannot escape from you
Helene

The forecasters speak of your might
And there’s nothing we can do to fight
From cringing when we hear your name
Helene

And we can easily understand
How you can easily flood our land
But you don’t know what it means to us
Helene

Helene, Helene, Helene, Helene
We’re begging of you please don’t flood our land
Helene, Helene, Helene, Helene
Please don’t harm us just because you can

You could choose another place
But homes aren’t easily replaced
It’s the only place for us
Helene

We’ve had to make this plea to you
Our happiness depends on you
And whatever scary path you choose
Helene

Helene, Helene, Helene, Helene
We’re begging of you please don’t flood our land
Helene, Helene, Helene, Helene
Please don’t harm us even though you can
Helene, Helene

Stay safe out there

Hope you enjoyed today’s story. And everyone in the path of Helene, stay safe.

I hope y’all will be OK. Although I live 300 miles inland, if a hurricane hit in just the right location, same thing could happen to us.

Please let us know that you are okay. We keep reading and seeing the devastation in Asheville. Thinking of you.

Hardcover books - With or without dust jacket?

So far, I've released my books only as e-books and paperbacks, but I routinely receive requests for other formats. Audiobooks lead the requests, but the voice talent and production costs make that challenging. The second most requested, hardcover editions, are much more doable.

Hardcovers, though, can come with or without the dust jacket. Which do you prefer?
