Pigeon River rapids

Cool Summer Rivers

Nestled in the beauty of our mountains, rivers form. On a hot summer day, the coolness of the flowing water beckons me to the shore.

Pigeon River rapids

Our home county – Haywood in North Carolina – is the highest average elevation county east of the Rocky Mountains. Thirteen mountain peaks soar above 6,000 feet.

That altitude produces an anomaly – one of the few places where all water originates within its boundaries. Every single creek and river flows out of the county.

The largest, the Pigeon River, forms the Southeastern corner of the county. The river flows to the northwest into Tennessee where it joins the French Broad River. These photographs are taken just a few miles after the river forms.Pigeon River calm - cool summer rivers
