Scariest Monsters
Halloween decorations are popping up around our neighborhood. Planning is well underway for the annual costume parade—mostly, but not all kids—and trick-or-treating.
And, of course, scary movies will fill the airwaves to give us all a good fright.
In that spirit, I asked you what the scariest monsters were. Though the votes were spread far and wide, demons and clowns bother you more than most everything else.
The Other Category
Before I get to my favorite part—the comments—let me share with you some of the great responses the filled up the other section. The answers were far too numerous to list, but here are some of the most common ones:
- Germs / Viruses / Microorganisms
- Spiders and insects of all the various hairy and mostly large varieties
- Government / Agents / Men in Black
- Anything wielding a chainsaw
- Jaws / sharks
That last one is particularly fun because it reminded me of an incident when I was a kid right after that crazy movie came out. I’ve made a note of it to share as a Monday Musing one week.
Comments
And let’s move on to my favorite comments.
Aliens: Sometimes I perceive new acquaintances as so weird I swear they are not from planet earth. Intriguing, but a bit scary at the same time.
Demons: Anything underworld like the over-depicted demon with the horns. Yikes.
Demons versus Vampires: Bram Stoker put me in dread of vampires until I read Anne Rice’s Vampire series: her new mythology actually made me care about them. Besides, the Count on Sesame Street is kinda cute. Demons still scare the bejesus out of me, though.
Demons versus Vampires versus Ghosts: My favorite stories are about vampires. None of them really scare me, but I am careful about ghosts since I am apparently more sensitive to them than most people and have had a few encounters. All but one was positive. The other one I never want to repeat.
None of the Above: None of those freak me out anymore but have someone walk around the corner when I’m not expecting them, inside or out, I’ll almost soil myself with fright.
All of the Above: Everything! I am a big scaredy-cat! But I think that demons and ghosts are the worst. Not fond of clowns either‚

Reader Surveys
Each month, I survey readers on a random topic. I might ask about books, reading, and authors, as this is my primary focus. Some months, the survey focuses on the mountain region that has been my home. Other months, the query will be something completely random. The debate over mayonnaise might be the most contested ever.
In time for the monthly newsletter, I summarize and share the overall results and some of the highlights I learned. To protect privacy, I don't attempt connect the data in anyway to individuals and then delete the responses.
The following is the result of one of those surveys. And if you want to participate in this month's survey, just click the button.
To cement your fear of clowns, watch the 1988 “Killer Klowns from Outer Space.” It’s goofy, campy, gory fun. I happened upon it on TV a while back. Confession: for a while, I was a professional clown magician. I didn’t resemble the killer klowns.
Professional clown magician might be the coolest job title I’ve ever heard.
