The first book in the series follows Temperance Brennan, an expert in skeletal remains with the Montreal coroner’s office. When a body is found, Temperance notices several odd items as a part of the autopsy. Her curiosity leads her to compare with old, unsolved cases which seem to have the same unusual traits. She comes to believe it’s the work of a serial killer.

The police, however, aren’t as convinced. They believe Temperance should stay in the lab and document her findings, but she insists on traveling about the city and asking questions. Her curiosity leads her into the shadowy night world of Quebec.

Her discoveries alienate law enforcement as she becomes the target of a previously unknown killer.
