Carver Briggs starts his high school senior year at the Nashville Arts Academy, what should be a happy time in life. Instead, he’s mourning the loss of his three best friends—Mars, Eli, and Blake—killed in a car accident. The driver, distracted with texting on his phone, plowed into a truck on the highway.
Carver struggles with guilt, because he was the one texting with the driver. A judge, Mar’s father, publicly calls for Carver to be charged with their murders. The Nashville police launch an investigation. Eli’s sister, also a student at the academy, challenges other students to make Carver an outcast.
Carver’s allies are few. His parents. A therapist. Eli’s girlfriend, Jesmyn. Blake’s grandmother, Betsy. It’s the last who proposes a Goodbye Day when Betsy and Carver will celebrate Blake’s favorite things by doing them. When subsequent Goodbye Days are held with the other grieving families, the survivors react with a range of emotions.
Ultimately, though, Carver must come to terms with his own feelings of loss, love, and responsibility.
