Alyson Tinsdale wants the best for her family, so she convinces her husband to stretch beyond their budget to buy a house in the most exclusive neighborhood in Denver. The purchase gives her access to an excellent school for her son while living among the movers and shakers of the city.
Once moved in, though, Alyson finds life challenging. Her husband has grown distant. Her son is struggling in class. And Alyson can’t find a way to break into the clique of women in the neighborhood.
The neighborhood matriarch, Bonnie Sloan, lives the perfect life—the biggest house, her eldest son preparing for Yale, her youngest daughter in kindergarten with Alyson’s son, and her husband a wealthy developer. Bonnie serves on the city council, is preparing for a state senate run, and is shepherding a controversial commercial project on the edge of their neighborhood.
When Alyson posts a photo on social media of Bonnie’s eldest son driving recklessly, she earns a powerful enemy. Bonnie plots to get even at a neighborhood party where Alyson gets drunk and embarrasses herself. The incident would be the talk of the neighborhood, except the next morning, Bonnie’s middle son is found dead in the neighborhood. The police suspect foul play.
The book is told from the two women’s points of view, alternating as their lives disintegrate in the suburban utopia.
